Biography:

I am the unit based Neonatal Intensive Care Educator at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital since 2018 My role concentrates in providing support and enhancing professional development to our neonatal nurses. I have over 30 years of Level IV NICU experience and have extensive knowledge in the care and management of newborns on nasal CPAP. I provide care for high-risk neonates, premature babies and infants with complex and complicated courses of care in the NICU. I am certified in Neonatal Nursing as well an NRP instructor.

Research Interest:

The presentation will focus on the nursing management and strategies in the respiratory care of neonates. An in-depth discussion on the use of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) as the initial mode of respiratory support in critically ill very low birth weight infants will be presented. The presentation will elaborate on the use of CPAP and its association with a lower incidence of chronic lung disease and how it supports the role of nasal CPAP in facilitating weaning from mechanical ventilation and reducing lung injury. Discussion on how nasal CPAP success rates is widely variable and may be attributable to how well it is utilized and how it is essential to evaluate strategies for success that are dependent on using correct CPAP devices, attention to detail and caregiver experience. The presentation will also include the nursing care and management of newborns that are mechanical ventilated and the nursing strategies to prevent unplanned extubations.
